The need for preparation an emergency kit
Attempts to boost level of preparedness in society in order to increase capacities for emergency response may lead to not only reducing different kinds of damages in the time of occurrence of disasters but to accelerate process of returning back to normal situation. Based on this, one way for getting prepared against disasters is equipping with emergency packs.
In case of a major event each family will need some basic supplies set aside. That way everybody will always be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours while emergency workers focus on people in urgent need.
Many of the items required in an emergency kit are found in most people's homes. It's just a question of taking some time and putting them together as your emergency kit.
Basic Emergency kit
An emergency kit contains some basic requirements which may be modified according to the number and special conditions of family members. It should be an easy to carry package or packages that can be taken if necessary. Back packs are preferred in this regard. Samples of items that should be picked up in an emergency kit are as follows:
- Water: 1/5 liters of water per person per day
- Food: nutritious food that won't spoil such as canned food, biscuits and dried foods (it should be mentioned that foods and waters should be replaced once a year)
Basic Supplies:
Battery-powered radio and flashlight with extra batteries, candles and matches or lighters, rope, can opener, multi – purpose pocket knife, plastic bags, toilet paper, pen and paper, needle and string, whistle, utensils, plastic plates, glasses and spoons, basic tools e.g. hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, work gloves, scotch tape and evacuation map
First Aid Kit:
Special needs items:
Such as prescription medications, infant formula or equipment for people with disabilities
Clothing, cleaning and sleeping articles:
Sleeping bag or warm blankets, extra clothing and footwear for each person, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, garbage bags, household chlorine bleach or water purifying tablets, liquid soap, and detergents.
Others:
Copies of important documents, e.g. passport and ID card, cash, extra keys for car and house, emergency cards, extra eye-glasses, artificial teeth, contact lens, earphone and toys.
