A webinar on the status of people with disabilities in disaster risk reduction planning and decisions was held on Feb 17, 2022 with the aim to find ways to reduce risks and challenges and to increase opportunities related to disabled people.

The seminar organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction (UNDDR) and Disaster Management Headquarter of District 6 of Tehran Municipality, highlighted the need to identify limitations and the importance of deepening members' relations with the United Nations offices in order to advance goals and to improve communication between members.

In addition to that importance of multi dimension efforts in the form of a Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), the need for policy-making and budgeting in the field of the disabled was discussed.

In the continuation of this webinar, special emphasis was paid to the rights of the disabled at the time of disasters and sustainable development, taking into account their conditions, as well as the need to pay attention to the disabled in security policies and humanitarian affairs.

It was also decided that the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities should provide them appropriate conditions for dealing with disasters and, in consultation with them, the rights of persons with disabilities should be considered in the event of an accident.

Following that it was approved that the organizations should be aware of the rights of people with disabilities at the time of the disasters and should not discriminate and people with disabilities should have access to educational and health services at the time of the accident.

The need to collect data related to people with disabilities, proper policy-making, attention to the goals set out in the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and equality in national and local capacities and priorities were other issues that were discussed at this meeting.

The Heads of 22 Districts Disaster Management Headquarters and managers of Dawam safety houses at Tehran neighborhoods level were on line participants and managers of disabled schools in district 6 and some of the TDMMO colleagues and experts were among participants of this event.
